Discovery Coast - Fiordland Explorer 6 days / 7 nites
Welcome to Fiordland, Part of the Great Bear Rainforest
We venture up the recently created Fiordland Recreational Area.
We hope to see bears, eagles and other wildlife as well as some spectacular wilderness where few people venture.
This area is off the beaten track and after a few days we end the journey in Bella Bella.
Welcome Aboard !
Itinerary:
Saturday
Board ferry in Port Hardy for a 9:30 pm departure.
Day 1 - Sunday
After a nite aboard travelling through Queen Charlotte Sound you awaken to the vessel in the "Inside Passage"
with some short stops at McLaughlin Bay, Shearwater and Klemtu. At Klemtu, home to the Kitasoo and Xai Xais people you will
meet your captain and tour guide for the next few days and settled onto the Viking 1. While in Klemtu we hope to take in a
native cultural tour often offered when the ferry arrives to this small community. We enjoy a nice meal aboard and head off
to find a nice spot to anchor for the nite.
Day 2 - Monday
After an enjoyable breakfast in a quiet cove we pull anchor and head north up Finlayson Channel between Sarah and Roderick
Islands. While Ken and the crew set some crab traps out in Carter Bay We have you paddle to the "Wreck of the Ohio". Turning
up Sheep Passage we head further inland before anchoring again just outside the fiordland boundaries.
Day 3 - Tuesday
Into Fiordland and on into Mussel Inlet and Poison Cove. It was here in 1793 that Captain Vancouver stopped with his survey
crew and after a meal of mussels eaten in Poison Cove, one of his Seamen John Carter died of shellfish poisoning. John Carter was
buried nearby in Carter Bay. Our next stop is Kynoch Inlet, get ready for some spectacular waterfalls. Spend the rest of the
day in this Inlet and into Culpepper Lagoon at it head. A walk among the lush vegetation ashore is a treat.
Day 4 - Wednesday
The Scenery is so nice here we may not want to leave but eventually we must. We head back into Mathieson Channel on our southbound
voyage, passing Pooley Island with its steep granite walls making our way down to Rescue Bay just south of Jackson Passage.
Day 5 - Thursday
Leaving Rescue Bay we make our way to Cockle Bay with its Sandy Beaches and great kayak haulout site. Paddle through Percival
Narrows and join the Viking 1 in Port Blackney. The many intricate waterways in the area are a paddlers dream.
Day 6 - Friday
Returning to Bella Bella, we encounter one open stretch of water where the open water swells from Millbank Sound make it interesting
as we cruise behind Ivory Island Lighthouse and up Seaforth Channel. We visit Bella Bella (Waglisla) then a visit to Shearwater where
we enjoy a final meal together at the Fishermens Bar and Grill. We say goodbye as you board the ferry for your southbound journey on
the ferry.
